What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so AI-powered answer engines, such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and voice assistants, can extract it and cite it as the answer to a user's question. It builds on SEO by adding direct answers, question-based structure, structured data and strong trust signals.

For twenty years, winning in search meant ranking in a list of ten blue links. That model now shares the page with AI-generated answers. When someone asks Google, ChatGPT or Perplexity a question, they increasingly get one synthesized answer with a handful of cited sources. Google says AI Overviews now reach more than 2.5 billion users a month (Alphabet Q2 2026 earnings). Answer Engine Optimization is the discipline of making your content one of those cited sources.

01What is an answer engine?#

An answer engine is a search system that responds to a query with a direct, generated answer instead of (or above) a list of links. Examples include Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and voice assistants such as Siri and Alexa. Most of them retrieve web pages first, then write an answer from those pages and cite some of them. That retrieval step is why SEO still matters: a page that isn't indexed or trusted is rarely retrieved.

02How is AEO different from SEO?#

Traditional SEO optimizes for ranking position. AEO optimizes for extractability and citation: can an AI system quickly pull a clear, accurate answer out of your page and feel confident attributing it to you? The two aren't opposed. AEO sits on top of SEO fundamentals and adds requirements SEO has historically treated as optional.

03How to optimize content for answer engines: a 7-step checklist#

  1. 1

List the real questions. Pull them from Search Console queries, People Also Ask boxes, sales and support conversations, and the questions buyers put to AI tools about your category.

  2. 2

Answer first. Put a direct, 40 to 60 word answer immediately under the heading that asks the question, then add detail. Don't make an engine read 800 words of preamble.

  3. 3

Use question-based headings. Phrase H2s and H3s the way people ask ("How long does local SEO take?"), so each section maps cleanly to one question.

  4. 4

Structure for extraction. Use lists for steps, tables for comparisons and short paragraphs with one idea each. These are easier for a model to parse and quote accurately.

  5. 5

Add structured data. Mark up articles, FAQs, products, organizations and how-tos with schema.org JSON-LD so the page's meaning is explicit.

  6. 6

Show who is behind the answer. Clear authorship, dates, sources and a consistent brand identity are the E-E-A-T signals that make a citation feel safe.

  7. 7

Keep facts consistent. If your site states different prices, hours or claims on different pages, engines lose confidence. One fact, stated one way, everywhere.

04How do you measure AEO?#

There is no single AEO report yet, so measurement combines several signals. Track a fixed set of target questions and record whether your brand is cited in AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity for each. Watch featured snippet and People Also Ask ownership in traditional results. And look at branded search and direct traffic, which tend to rise as more people see your brand named inside answers even when they don't click.

05Common AEO mistakes#

  • Burying the answer below long introductions, anecdotes or keyword-stuffed paragraphs.
  • Writing vague answers ("it depends") without then giving the specific conditions it depends on.
  • Hiding content in tabs or accordions that aren't in the page's HTML, so crawlers can't see it.
  • Publishing FAQ content that contradicts what service or product pages say.
  • Treating AEO as a replacement for technical SEO. If the page isn't crawled and indexed, it can't be cited.

FAQFrequently asked questions

No. SEO aims to rank a page in search results; AEO aims to have your content quoted inside AI-generated answers. AEO depends on SEO, because answer engines mostly cite pages they can crawl, index and trust.

AEO focuses on being cited as the answer to specific questions. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) focuses on how generative AI describes and recommends your brand across broader research and comparison queries.

FAQ rich results are now shown for only a small set of authoritative government and health sites, but FAQ structured data still makes question-and-answer content explicit to machines, and the visible Q&A format itself is what answer engines extract.

Restructured pages can start appearing in AI answers within weeks of being recrawled. Building the authority that makes you a default source for a topic takes months, like SEO.
