What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving how often and how accurately generative AI systems, such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, mention, describe and recommend a brand. It combines consistent entity information across the web, content rich in citable facts and statistics, and third-party coverage those systems learn from.

Ask an AI assistant "what's the best project management tool for a small agency?" and it won't return ten links. It returns a short list of recommended brands with a sentence on each. If your brand isn't in that list, or is described inaccurately, you've lost the shortlist before a buyer ever reaches your site. Generative Engine Optimization is about influencing that answer.

01Where does the term GEO come from?#

The term was introduced in a 2023 research paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by Aggarwal and colleagues at Princeton University, IIT Delhi and others. The researchers tested how different content changes affected a source's visibility in generative engine responses across thousands of queries. Their headline finding: adding citations, quotations from relevant sources and statistics increased source visibility by up to 40%, while traditional tactics like keyword stuffing performed poorly.

02GEO vs SEO vs AEO#

03What makes content more likely to be cited by generative engines?#

  • Specific, verifiable facts. Numbers, dates, definitions and named sources give a model something concrete to reuse.
  • Statistics and quotations with attribution. This was the strongest content-level lever in the original GEO research.
  • Depth on a focused topic. One thorough page tends to be drawn from more than ten thin pages that mention a topic in passing.
  • Clear structure. Headings that match questions, short sections and comparison tables are easier to synthesize accurately.
  • Third-party corroboration. Generative engines weigh what other trusted sites say about you, not only what you say about yourself.

04Why entity data is the foundation of GEO#

Generative engines build a picture of your business from many sources: your website and its structured data, business profiles, directories, review platforms, knowledge bases such as Wikidata, and press coverage. When those sources disagree about what you do, where you operate or what you're called, the model has to guess. Aligning your entity data (name, description, category, services, locations and key facts) across every source is unglamorous, but it's the step that makes every other GEO effort more reliable.

05How to start with GEO in five steps#

  1. 1

Audit your current AI visibility. Run your core category, comparison and "best" queries in AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and record whether you appear and how you're described.

  2. 2

Fix your entity data. Make your name, description, services and locations consistent across your site's Organization schema, business profiles, directories and social profiles.

  3. 3

Deepen your key pages. Add specific facts, statistics with sources, expert quotes and comparison tables to the pages that matter most commercially.

  4. 4

Earn third-party mentions. Digital PR, industry roundups, reviews and expert commentary create the independent corroboration generative engines trust.

  5. 5

Re-check monthly. AI answers change often, so track the same query set over time rather than judging from a single snapshot.

FAQFrequently asked questions

No. Generative engines usually retrieve web pages before they generate an answer, and strong SEO makes your pages more likely to be retrieved. GEO adds entity consistency, citable content and third-party authority on top of SEO.

Organic AI answers can't be bought. Google does show ads above and within AI Overviews in some markets, but those are labelled as sponsored and are separate from the generated answer.

Track a fixed set of category and comparison queries across the main AI tools, and record inclusion, position in any list, accuracy of the description and which sources are cited. Watch branded search volume as a secondary signal.
